A new type of plastic decomposes under the action of UV in 3 hours

A team of chemists and researchers at the University of North Dakota has developed a method for obtaining plastic from biomass, which can be safely disposed of under the influence of ultraviolet radiation of a certain frequency.

As a starting material for creating a new type of plastic, molecules of such biological materials as oilseeds, lignin (a complex polymer compound characterizing the stiffened walls of plant cells), cellulose and sucrose are used to form the building blocks, later polymerized to a new material.

As an experiment, researchers obtained plastic, the starting material for which was the usual fructose. Subsequently, by irradiating the test material with ultraviolet radiation with a wavelength of 350 nm, the team ensured that plastic degraded to soluble biological compounds.

Although in reality before the commercialization of the new method is still very far away and the quality of the created "organic" plastic raises questions, recycling of plastic waste without the use of chemicals and industrial units looks very promising. For comparison, you can evaluate the method of disposal proposed in 2010: during pyrolysis in a fluidized bed reactor at a temperature of about 500 ° C and without oxygen, the plastic decomposes to form wax, styrene, terephthalic acid, methyl methacrylate and carbon.

According to the US National Park Service, the decomposition of a plastic bottle is 450 years.
