Large Hadron Collider launch again

On November 23, the first test launch of protons at our beloved LHC took place, which was discovered by the Higgs boson, and then went on a well-deserved vacation. Now it is launched again.

Particle beams are directed from the proton supersynchrotron (LHC preaccelerator) in the direction of two injectors and stopped directly in front of the entrance to the accelerator, according to the CERN website .

To stop the beams used 21.6-ton heaps of graphite, aluminum and copper. The particles generated during the collision (mainly muons), in turn, were used to calibrate the time on the adjacent ALICE and LHCb experimental facilities (beam detectors provide accurate collision timing, so that time is synchronized with a single LHC time).

Although real physical experiments will not begin until 2015, the LHC control group conducted tests to check its control systems, collider instruments, the direction of the transmission lines, make first optical measurements and notice possible bottlenecks in the beam path.

The illustration shows the transverse beam profile on the T12 injection lines (left) and T18 (right).

The next test launch of the LHC will take place in a large ring and is scheduled for February 2015.
