European Parliament voted to separate Google’s search business from the rest of the company's services.

As the Financial Times reported a few days ago, the European Parliament was ready to demand that Google split the company's business into two components: the search engine and other services, which, according to parliamentarians, should have helped reduce the search giant's monopoly position in Europe.

As it became known today, European lawmakers did indeed vote for this resolution. The main core of this decision was the European People’s Party and the Socialists: 384 votes in favor, 174 against, with 56 abstentions. It should be noted that we are not talking specifically about Google, but given the fact that, according to regulators' estimates, the share of Google in search queries exceeds 90%, it is the American search giant that is implied as the main figure in the solution.

The decision of the European Parliament itself is a recommendation, and does not mean that Google needs to take some immediate business actions, but the presence of a legislative resolution means that regulators can make demands on the company’s management not at the commission level, but at the level of the highest legislative body in the European Union. union.

The search giant has been involved in antitrust investigations in Europe for four years and has repeatedly been accused of manipulating search results, raising references to its own services above (Microsoft was one of the companies that filed such a complaint). In addition, Google has also repeatedly been accused of overly free handling of personal data of users, and the scandal with the collection of information from open Wi-Fi networks in Germany, when cars that were shooting for Google Street View, “mistakenly” scanned and all traffic, became rather famous. Edward Snowden also made a contribution, accusing Google of working with US intelligence agencies.
