How Twitter helps keep track of unemployment

Researchers from the Autonomous University of Madrid found out what imprint unemployment imposes on people's behavior on Twitter . It turned out that the lack of work affects the time of tweet publishing, their frequency and even the number of spelling errors.

Users in areas of Spain with high unemployment write about work, send more messages on the social network and make mistakes.

A person’s life is closely related to his social and economic status. For example, our movement around the city depends on our work and lifestyle. And they also affect the behavior in social networks. At the Autonomous University of Madrid, a link was found between the unemployment rate and the number and quality of Twitter messages in Spanish cities. For this, a base of 19.6 million geolocation tweets sent between November 2012 and June 2013 was used.

The more unemployed - the more tweets between nine in the morning and noon on weekdays. Among these tweets, many contain the words "work" and "unemployed." Also, these messages contain many errors, which, according to the assumptions of researchers, may reflect the low level of literacy among the unemployed.

This method is both fast and easy. With it, you can observe what is happening in a certain area: is everything good for people with work, or has the crisis hit too hard. Unfortunately, researchers do not guarantee that the same method will work in another country. Also, the method is less effective in areas where Twitter is not very popular.
