SAP + Google Glass =?

The topic about which I want to write here is rather narrowly specialized and went unnoticed in Russian-language IT publications. SAP is preparing to release two applications that will be available for download on Google Play.

So far, SAP has found two main applications for a wearable device in integration with its solutions.

The first application is designed to solve warehouse management. The demo video shows how the driver of the loader, when starting to work, can use the voice command to get the warehouse tasks on the device screen that are automatically distributed to it from the existing pool, based on selection criteria based on the type of storage resource (type of controlled vehicle) and priorities and other options that allow optimal distribution of work in the warehouse among workers. After receiving the task and confirming the beginning of its execution, the driver receives on the screen navigation instructions for finding a storage bin, determined automatically or in manual mode, by the shift master, which stores the appropriate stock. At the same time, the dimensions of the cargo being taken and its contents are shown on the screen so that it can select the appropriate type of pallet. When approaching the desired storage space, the augmented reality system highlights the cell from which the stock should be taken. The worker takes the box with the goods, and the barcode is scanned with a camera built into the glasses. The worker confirms the stock selection and delivers to the target location - for example, to the preparation area before loading the order into the wagon.

Similarly, the selection of smaller goods works. In this case, tasks for the employee can also be selected automatically, based on the appropriate type of resource - “person”. Tasks for selection will be confirmed in a temporary packaging - a trolley, after which you can deliver the goods to the repacking zone and complete the customer's order for transportation.

The system can also perform side functions that are not directly related to the movement of the stock — for example, to warn the driver about possible collisions, or to include the assistance of an assistant during minor repairs of the car.

The second application is intended just for the masters of maintenance and repair. The worker in the same way will receive the maintenance task on the points screen and confirm the start of its execution. The system will be able to perform the functions of navigation on the serviced object. And at repair to issue on the screen instructions for elimination of malfunction.

Why is all this necessary?

The use of the augmented reality system in this area not only looks beautiful, but also allows for a slight reduction in the time for performing warehouse operations. With large daily shipments in large warehouses, where it is important to follow a strict picking schedule so that delays in the delivery of goods to the customer do not occur, this can be very useful.

The engine for the graphical shell is likely to be the already well-known SAP solution - Extended Warehouse Management. Currently, this solution works in close integration with mobile equipment lines - various terminals, scales, packaging machines, etc. Therefore, support for integration with wearable devices should not cause significant difficulties for such a large and experienced player in the market.

At the moment, against the background of general disappointment in the device, examples of such solutions can inspire optimism to developers who have begun to roll out their projects.

Finally, here is another possible spectacular application of Google Augmented Reality technology in aviation. And what options do you know?
