November 22, 1859 was born Fusadziro Yamauchi. At thirty, he developed a card game and founded his own gaming company. At that time, Japan had a law banning foreign playing cards: the authorities did not want illegal cash games to be distributed in the country. The law was maintained for about 250 years since 1633, and it was succeeded to circumvent it thanks to the creation of Yamauchi's own deck of cards - “Hanafud”. As you can see, Nintendo also did not start at all with game consoles.
There were no numbers on the cards in the deck, animals and birds, inscribed ribbons, images of the moon, phoenix, and so on were used. A deck of cards has 12 suits of 4 cards each, consisting of 48 cards. Each suit is the month of the year to which the plant corresponds: hence the name “Hanafuda” means “Flower cards”. They were drawn by hand. One of the most popular games with floral cards is Koy-Koy,

In 1907, the ban on foreign-style decks was lifted - for 270 years it remained in force. Nintendo began to produce cards in a foreign style, first for export, and then they took root in Japan. By the way, they sold the cards in tobacco shops, for which Yamauchi signed a contract with Japan Tobacco & Salt Public Corporation.

This is a very late deck, released many years after the death of the company's founder - in the 1960s.

Nintendo's first office was located in this building, for which Yamauchi bought it in 1889. The head office changed only in 1933, and even then it was the building next door.

And the Nintendo logo initially looked like this.

For 40 years, Fusadziro led the company, which remained the leader in Japan in the market of playing cards. Only in 70 years he retired, having appointed his son-in-law to be a successor. This is quite an interesting tradition - to leave your son at the head of the company, and if there is none, then the daughter's husband, who also needs to take his wife's name. His son-in-law was called Shokire Yamauchi, and he was the grandfather of Hiros Yamauchi, to whom
we owe the gaming business of Nintendo .
