Report from the production of YotaPhone 2

A year and a half or two years ago, the overwhelming majority of consumer electronics, declared as “Russian development,” were standard models made in China, only with a different logo. But the way out, albeit a rather specific, but still really fully developed in Russia, smartphone with two such different displays, saved the phrase “Russian smartphone” from a touch of irony. And the second model is expected soon, in which a lot of work has been done to improve and correct errors.

The first YotaPhone 2 concept was demonstrated at the Mobile World Congress last spring. Yota Devices promised to start selling in October, but the development and establishment of production was somewhat delayed. In any case, before the New Year, the smartphone will already be widely represented in retail. Today we want to introduce you to the production line, where the “second Russian smartphone” is assembled with the second display on electronic ink.

The launch of the device in the series is engaged in the Singapore company Hi-P. In narrow professional circles, she is known for the fact that from the first day of the creation of the BlackBerry company produces all their products. In addition, Hi-P manufactures a number of nodes for Apple, Amazon and Motorola. To date, the company, existing for 34 years, owned 15 factories. Most industries are located in China, the rest in the United States, Poland and Thailand. Of course, the headquarters of Hi-P is located in Singapore.

The duties of Singaporeans, as an ODM partner of Yota Devices, include the implementation of a full cycle of smartphone manufacturing, including the manufacture of plastic parts. The establishment of mass production of such a complex product as a smartphone requires a lot of experience, since it is also necessary to adapt the architecture of the device to the existing production conditions. It should be emphasized that it was Yota Devices that developed solutions to all sorts of problems that occurred during the establishment of production, and Hi-P implemented these solutions in its factories.

YotaPhone 2 is made at a factory in the city of Suzhou, 90 km from Shanghai. This is a new production, with a much higher level of automation and greater productivity - up to 450 thousand devices per month. True, Yota Devices has no plans to fully load the plant’s capacity, the batch ordered is 150 thousand smartphones.

At the factory, production takes place in two shifts of 8 hours each. The average salary of ordinary employees is about $ 300 per month. This is good money by local standards. At the same time, working conditions are quite comfortable, new modern equipment is used.

The assembly shop maintains a very high level of cleanliness, being here is allowed only in protective overalls and after a mandatory visit to the cleaning chamber - the “air shower”. Build YotaPhone 2 is carried out only on four lines, and one and a half of them are used for testing.

The front screen with the highest precision, to microns, is mounted on the chassis of a smartphone using an automated device. This solders the display to the chassis. Especially for YotaPhone 2, a version of the AMOLED display was developed without several technological layers, including a metal backing to provide rigidity. All this was done to reduce the thickness of the display module, since there is little, frankly, free space in a smartphone with two displays. Also, the new display has improved heat transfer, for this is intended and a graphite substrate. And the rigidity of the whole structure gives the chassis of the device itself.

Also, the graphite substrate is used for the second display on electronic ink. Without these substrates, it would be impossible to efficiently remove heat from a very tightly assembled device. Rear panels with integrated display, NFC and wireless charging modules are assembled in Taiwan at the E-Ink factory, from where they come in the collection.

In the YotaPhone 2, NFC contact and wireless charging occur straight ... through the display. But the list of uniqueness of the smartphone does not end there - an antenna is built into its chassis.

Each copy of the smartphone is subjected to rigorous testing, checks the operation of each node. If all tests are successfully passed, all necessary software is installed on the smartphone and a serial number is assigned.

The packaging design is very similar to the one in which the YotaPhone is shipped.

Finally, we want to remind you of the characteristics of YotaPhone 2:
