Changes on Geektimes. Home page
Hi, geeks!
Today we changed the scheme of the formation of the main page Geektimes. Now all users, whether registered or guests, see one shared feed of posts. We decided to abandon the personalization (tapes) inherited from “Habr” and return the good old main page that started “Habr” back in 2006.
Surely many of you remember the main page "Habra". Every author dreamed of getting into it, for this it was necessary to place a publication in any hub (then blog) and score at least 7 rating points. With the growing popularity of the resource, the general home page, in which literally everything was cooked (starting from publications about development and ending with publications about how to monitor health), became a headache not only for us, but also for users: it mixed different "segments of the population ”, Which often turned into endless disputes and karmic wars.

The introduction of the "tape" with the ability to personalize the main page allowed to dissolve people with different interests and views in different rooms. This step allowed to solve many problems: the number of minuses decreased, users began to read only what they were interested in, complaints " tired of posts on topic X " and endless arguments about what was wrong with Habrahabr disappeared.
It is hard to believe, but the transition from the “main” to the “ribbon” took place already in March 2011 - more than three years ago! During this time, “Habr” has grown to 10 million unique users per month, and you probably have had time to get used to the personal tape, and now with some indignation you will accept the innovation.
The “main page” will only be on “Giktames” - and here's why. “Habr” is a purely professional community, where the division into “sects” is literally necessary because of the specificity of publications, while the materials on “Hiktimes” are intended for a much wider audience. We do not want that on a new project you “by inertia” follow only one area - we want you to broaden your horizons, to learn something new every day.
We expect that the return to the old main page will also have a favorable effect on the following aspects:
- The increase in the number of views of publications (and with it - and other indicators) that the new project does not hurt. "Threshold exit" to the main is +5.
- Reducing the resentment associated with the need to customize the tape on another project. Indeed, other hubs on “Giktatimes”, new ones are created literally every week - it’s not easy to keep track of all the changes even to those who live on the site.
Other changes on Geektimes:
- Increased font size of publications;
- In the hubs appeared thematic rubricator;
- Added support for inserting tweets with <twitter> </ twitter> tag:
- Added support for inserting videos from YouTube with a timestamp;
- The user profile has been slightly reworked: instead of the unclaimed “Subscribers” tab, there are now three more important tabs: publications, comments, and the selected user.
- At the very top of each publication, the author's nickname and his karma with a rating are displayed, for which you can vote immediately from the publication page. Do not be lazy to thank the authors if you liked their publications;
- Changes in subsections of hubs: now there are “Publications” (Interesting and everything in a row) and “Authors”.
- Other minor fixes.
For this year we have planned a few more updates.
