Jolla Tablet: the world's first crowdsourcing tablet (beating crowdfunding records)
We had not had a day to go, when another sensational premiere of a tablet with Finnish roots was replaced by another one: the development company (coming from Nokia) Jolla officially announced its first tablet, the Jolla Tablet . Moreover, it announced not just like that, but under the sauce of the first crowdsourcing (here it is meant that the company will listen to the wishes of its consumers) and crowdfunding tablet in the world.
Fundraising was announced at Indiegogo and two hours after the start, the required amount ($ 380,000) was raised. By the time of writing this post, the collected funds exceed the bar by 23% ( UPD: by 175%, ie, about 2.7 times; the first $ 1 million was collected in less than 48 hours) and continue to be replenished. The cost of the tablet under the terms of the collection was $ 189 for the first thousand people, but at the moment there is an opportunity to order a tablet for $ 209. According to the developers, sending finished devices to end-users will begin in May 2015. The Jolla Tablet will be available in Russia, the EU, Norway, Switzerland, the USA, India, China and Hong Kong. ')
The use of crowdfunding in this case looks more like a good PR move, but in Jolla this is explained by the desire to create a product together with users.
“Crowdfunding has become the basis for a large number of great, inspiring and independent products and it is ideally suited to the spirit of Jolla. We have a strong international community behind us and we want to give them the opportunity to contribute to the project from the very beginning and take part in the campaign to develop the Jolla tablet, ”comments Mark Dillon, one of the co-founders and COO of the company.
Like the first device of Jolla Phone, the tablet is based on the Sailfish OS operating system, equipped with a 64-bit Intel 1.8-GHz quad-core processor, 2 GB of operational memory and 32 GB of internal memory (expandable with microSD cards). Diagonal touch screen with multitouch support up to five touches is 7.85 inches. It is made by IPS technology and has a resolution of 2048x1536 pixels. Perhaps this is pure coincidence, but the characteristics are quite similar to the Nokia N1.
The main camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels and is capable of recording video in FullHD resolution at 60 frames per second. There is also a 2 megapixel front camera.
The case dimensions are 203 x 137 x 8.3 mm, and the weight is 384 grams. The battery has a capacity of 4300 mAh. The tablet does not support mobile networks, limited to data transfer via Wi-Fi (802.11 a / b / g / n) and Bluetooth 4.0. At the same time, the Jolla Tablet is for some reason equipped with a GPS module. Connecting to the tablet via the micro-USB OTG connector.
