Review of the first generation Toyota Electro Multivision (EMV) system

Good day!

Today you will not surprise anyone with a monitor in the car. They are put regularly even in frets. We are all accustomed to controlling the functions of the car by touching the screen or watching TV while standing in traffic. Of course, this was not always the case. Such devices have their own history of development, which is no less interesting than the history of, for example, personal computers.

So, today we consider the firstborn of such systems from the company Toyota. For the first time, EMV was introduced 30 years ago, back in 1985, as an option for the Toyota Soarer in the back of the MZ12.

This is what the “saury” looked like:

By the way, next year the next generation Soarer was introduced, in which the system was significantly upgraded.

In 1985, the system could do the following:

All EMV units of the first generation are shown in the figure:

In addition to the frames and wires can be noted the following blocks:

Information display modes

Let us consider in more detail what the system is capable of.

So, turn on the car:

For 2-3 seconds, System Check is displayed on the screen. At this point, the systems listed on the screen should be checked, although some sources state that this is nothing more than the start screen.

After loading the system, the Drive Screen is turned on

In this mode, the following information is displayed:

Press the middle button on the mode switch and drop out on the screen of information about fuel consumption.

Here, in the form of graphs, the fuel consumption is displayed (in km / l), instantaneous - on the right, history in a few minutes - on the left.
The right button will show us the service screen.

The system allows you to select the maintenance procedure (for example, change the brake pads) from the preset list and specify the mileage in kilometers through which the procedure must be repeated. As soon as this mileage is approaching, a reminder will be displayed on the screen.

And finally, the TV. Works like a normal TV, is controlled from the remote. Shows only if the car is standing still.

I recommend to watch a video about how it all works live.

A detailed advertising booklet in Japanese with information about the car and the EMV system (By the way, a unique website, the world's largest online collection of advertising catalogs of JDM cars).

Thank you for your attention, if you have information about such systems, please share in the comments.
