Startup Knightscope prepares human-sized security robots for work



This weekend, a quartet of 135-pound security robots patrolled the area around the Microsoft campus in Silicon Valley (building number 1). It all looked like a sci-fi movie, but in reality it’s a reality. The patrol did not run into obstacles, successfully bypassing garbage cans, walls and other objects that prevented movement.

At the same time, the robots look quite nice, although quite strictly. The team of robots - the first copies of a robotized patrol from a start-up Knightscope . The model of the robot, which runs now in Silicon Valley, was named K5. 7 copies have already been built, and 4 patrol robots will be manufactured by the end of the year.

The purpose of the patrol robot is to destroy all humans to keep order on the streets. If the machine evaluates human behavior as abnormal, then the robot gives a report to the remote center. In order to navigate in the surrounding space and analyze the behavior of meeting people, robots are equipped with cameras, sensors, navigation equipment and electric motors. Also there are batteries and computing node. In total, the robot has four high resolution cameras (one for each side), one camera for license plate recognition, four microphones and a weather station (measurement of atmospheric pressure, carbon dioxide level and temperature). To communicate with each other and transfer data to the center, Wi-Fi or wireless networks of telecom operators are used. An operator can connect to the robot at any time.

There are tools in the robot and lasers for the destruction of humans , complementing the navigation system, and helping the machine to avoid obstacles. If you need to patrol the desired area, the robot receives a base map, and begins exploring the terrain, complementing the map.



Battery charge is enough for the day of the robot. In the future, robots will be able to recharge themselves, using special docking stations.

By the way, robots can stand up for themselves. No, they have no weapons. But if a person begins to detect signs of aggression in relation to the robot, he will give a signal to the control center, and if he re-attack, he turns on the siren and sends a new report. If a person sees some incident next to it, then you can click on the button at the top of the robot body, which will attract the attention of the operator.

Next year, the company will begin to provide its robots to interested companies (of which there are already quite a few). In addition, these machines are ideal for work on student campuses, shopping centers and other public places.

It is clear that robots have problems. If the machine gets stuck or falls, then you have to enter the field exit support. Independently solve such problems K5 is not able yet.
