NASA is testing a plane with flexible flaps

The NASA Green Aviation project is one step closer to creating technology that will make the planes of the future even more quiet and efficient in terms of energy consumption. Successfully passed the first test flight of an aircraft with wings capable of changing its shape right during the flight.

This summer, the developers have replaced the standard aluminum flaps with an improved version of them: surfaces that can change shape and bend. During the flight, the possibility of such flaps to improve aerodynamic efficiency and get rid of the noise, which, as you remember, accompanies flap manipulations during takeoff and landing, was tested.

Interestingly, FlexFoil technology can be used on any modern aircraft. The technology will help to further reduce their weight and, consequently, save more fuel and calm those passengers who are afraid of any rustle and noise in the aircraft.

For the NASA project, Gulfstream III has been upgraded.
