Interestingly, the exact time service worked until the “talking hours” appeared. Only telephonists answered the calls of Muscovites, they reported the time that their watches showed. Subscribers of the Moscow telephone service exact time since 1937 reported the voice of Emanuel Tobias. But after the war, he was replaced by the voice of announcer Olga Vysotskaya, which could be heard until 1970.

The sound device of the original system consists of an aluminum drum on which the phonograms of the phrases of hours and minutes are pasted, and a sound pickup. The minute pickup changes its position every minute, and after 59 minutes it returns to its original position, while simultaneously moving the clock pickup to the next track.

Already later, in the seventies, an apparatus appeared with magnetic disks and two circles, one of which had a clock, another on the minute. The German device "Asman" reported the time with the voice of Olga Friedenson.

In 1993, they switched to digital format: from this year, the digital device compiled words. Then the clock began to communicate and seconds in the voice of Lyudmila Veselova, which can be heard today. Even after her death.

The “Talking Hours” earned on November 7, 1937, as a gift from Moscow telecommunications workers to the celebration of the October Revolution. But the USSR was not a pioneer: as early as 1933, a device-analogue was introduced in London. There worked a system from the British developers Shepherd-Bush, where the soundtracks were recorded on glass discs.
