Solar Panel Bike Path

TNO, together with two other local firms, developed the SolaRoad technology, which allows the roadway to convert solar energy into electrical energy. A trial plot of a 70-meter-long bicycle lane has already been laid in the town of Krommen, 25 km from Amsterdam. It consists of modules measuring 2.5 x 3.5 m. The solar panels are located under a centimeter layer of tempered glass that can support the weight of a truck.

By 2016, it is planned to increase the length of the walkway to 100 m. In its current state, it is able to generate enough energy to meet the electricity needs of three houses. In the future, it is assumed that such modular pavements will be able to provide energy to road lighting objects and power electric bicycles and electric cars.

Over the next three years, experts will assess the performance of the running section of the bike lane. Preliminary tests in the laboratory confirmed that such road modules comply with Dutch safety standards for road surfaces.
