Aerial Burton has made a display projecting a 3D image right into the air.

I don’t want to appear “yellow” at all, but in my opinion this is really a promising technology, as it doesn’t need any projection surface, only air and nothing more. The construction of volumetric images is performed using a powerful infrared laser, generating pulses with a frequency of up to 1000 times per second. As a result of air ionization in the right points of space, we see bright points (pixels - or voxels), which form a quite clear 3D picture. Of course, holograms from science fiction are still far away, but in my humble opinion, if you increase the resolution and increase the frequency, you can achieve quite a decent result.

The developers report that the product is being developed as a commercial one and one of the applications is to alert the public about certain dangers when there is no space or resources for other methods of warning. The release of the first models is planned in the beginning of 2015. The main areas for improvement are compaction and resolution enhancement.

By the way, it is worth noting that the installation is portable enough to move it on a pickup, or a minivan.
