29.10 .2014 - the Internet 45!

Happy Birthday Internet!

What is considered a reference point for determining the age of the Internet? When discussing this issue, enough copies were already broken. Someone suggested using the start date of the project, someone accepting TCP / IP, but the first "tangible" manifestation of the Internet was the launch of the first ARPANET node connecting the University of California and Stanford on October 29, 1969.

Under the cut there is little text and a lot of pictures.

The log in which “talked to SRI, host to host” was recorded has been preserved.

The University of California team was able to connect the SDS Sigma 7 with the SDS 940, located 350 km.

The group of researchers standing near the teletype, receiving data using ARPANET:

The final view of the first message transmitted was determined by an error. At the time the connection was established, the research teams communicated using the telephone. When Bill Duval at UCLA scored an “L”, he asked his colleagues if they got an “L”. The answer was yes. Then he dialed "O" and again received confirmation, but the attempt to transfer "G" failed. Instead of the scheduled “login”, they were able to transfer only “LO”.

This event is reflected in a short article in the Daily Bruin newspaper (a student newspaper at the University of California).
