Ford Mondeo equipped with a clever obstacle recognition system

A new line of Ford Mondeo will appear from October in Europe. Ford engineers decided to increase the level of vehicle safety by using the latest technologies that are already used in computer systems of some cars. New, automatic recognition of obstacles, called Pre-Collision Assist. Its peculiarity is that when driving, the space in front of the car is scanned all the time, and if an obstacle arises, an emergency braking system is triggered. Thus, even if a person does not have time to react, the computer will stop the car in time, avoiding an accident.

Pre-Collision Assist works on the basis of the camera and radar. If the obstacle is far away, the system simply warns the driver and prepares the car for braking, reducing the gap between the brake discs and pads. In addition, the driver will be given an audio signal on the presence of obstacles. If the driver does not respond to the warning and does not slow down, the system automatically activates the brake system.

The developers believe that Pre-Collision Assist will help reduce the risk of accidents. However, due to the fact that the system largely depends on the camera, in cases of limited visibility or at night, its effectiveness decreases.

The company's engineers have already conducted a test of the new system in real conditions, driving more than 400 thousand kilometers (using different cars) on vehicles with Pre-Collision Assist on three continents. Various weather conditions and situations were checked.

The novelty will be offered to buyers as an additional option. And the first Ford Mondeo cars equipped with this system will appear in Europe already this year. In the United States and other countries - a little later, probably in early 2015.
