3D printing is actively developing, and at times it seems that the possibilities for its use are almost endless. Today, with its help, houses, nozzles for rocket engines, blood vessels and
prostheses are being created . Last year, the “most detailed model” of the human brain was the imprint made after scanning the shares of the real
human brain . Today, combining the results of MRI and 3D printing technology, experts have the opportunity not only to help doctors with the most complex operations, but also to send your brain model to you by mail.
Medical applicationsIn September, another specimen appeared in the ever-growing collection of cases of interesting use of 3D printing. Doctors at the Children's Hospital of Boston used a 3D model of the patient's brain to work out the planned hemispherectomy.
Considering the complexity of the procedure, the doctors decided to first create an exact copy of the patient's brain based on the data obtained by MRI. It was printed from soft plastic with an accuracy of 16 microns. For more detail, the blood vessels were made in different colors. According to Dr. Joseph Madsen, doctors can work out the surgery directly on the model.

The subsequent operation carried out in Boston, as well as a similar procedure, which also used the 3D model of the patient's brain in SĂŁo Paulo, was successful, although it required a ten-hour work of the surgeon.
Commercial use
Around the same time, the New Zealand company Brainform, which specializes in creating models of the human brain based on MRI data, announced itself. All you need is the results of your examination. If you are not able to obtain such data,
Brainform offers you to choose a vending model from the “brain base”.
The resulting print is suitable for personal use as well as for use as educational material. The “brain”, printed in full size, will cost $ 430, but you can order a model in 1: 2 scale, which costs only $ 140. If you use “stock” models, it will cost less, 360 and 100 dollars, respectively. You can also choose the color that you like best, “classic white” or “modern gray metallic”.
Although Brainform is located in New Zealand, they state that the cost of shipping to the rest of the world "will be within reasonable limits."
