Torvalds doesn't like gnome

Linux founding father Linus Torvalds (Linus Torvalds) the other day again expressed his attitude towards the GNOME desktop environment and its developers. And this attitude seems to have deteriorated even more since his last public statements on this issue in 2005. Although even then he directly called on users to switch to KDE.

In his recent letters to the Linux Desktop Architects mailing list , which was created to communicate and collaborate with developers of various graphical desktop environments, Linus described in detail all his arguments against Gnome.

His main idea is this: in his unconditionally noble desire to make work in Linux as simple and convenient as possible for any user, even those who are just starting to get familiar with a computer, the creators of Gnome achieved great results. But they could not stop and, breaking through all the speed of the wall of common sense, put the simplicity of the interface above the elementary utility. Now, using Gnome just physically can not do many of the necessary things.

Just being easy to use [ for a program ] is bad. Because it means that when the initial learning curve ends, you may know the program, but you cannot do what you want to do. It is, in fact, much worse to start learning than being difficult.

Example after example, Torvalds proves the inadequacy that Gnome authors are showing in his opinion. Those are protected, but noticeably restraining themselves, so as not to accidentally be rude to the Founder. It is obvious that in the views on, if I may say so, the design of the operating system debaters adhere to diametrically opposed views. If Linus wants to give the user the greatest possible freedom in setting up and managing everything and everyone, gnomovtsy make the main emphasis on usability and stability. And this, in their opinion, means the prohibition of access from the GUI to all places critical to the system.

Who is right? At the moment, when the Linux user community is still very narrow, the simplicity of Gnome really seems redundant and even turns into flawed. But when (let's not say “if”) a free OS will occupy a noticeable share on the PC of home users of Gnome can be damn useful for beginners.
