Engineers and scientists have been pondering about human life in space for a long time, trying to find the optimal form and place for settlement. Someone thinks that the best place is the Moon, or Titan. Someone is planning to explore asteroids.
Well, someone thinks that the orbit of our planet is an ideal place for human life. At the same time, plans for the development of the orbit are offered different, and one of the most unusual projects of this type is the
Stanford torus .
')
In the 70s of the last century, Stanford students (now all of them, probably, venerable scientists) proposed a special device for a space orbital settlement. This is a circular space station, which is given a rotation, providing an artificial gravity value of 0.9-1g.

On the inner surface of the circle is an artificial ecosystem with the usual conditions for humans. Sunlight is directed to the settlements by a special system of mirrors. The spokes of the "wheel" provide the fastening of the outer rim to the inner and simultaneously serve as tunnels for the movement of vehicles and people.

According to the project, 10-140 thousand people can live at such a station, depending on the size of the ring. On a larger rim you can arrange farms, forest park zones and everything else that a person needs for a normal life. Well, the “view from the window” of such a station is simply unbelievable - probably, you can give half your life for the opportunity to settle here.

Of course, modern technologies and the amount of resources available to humans are not enough to create such a ring, but perhaps something similar will be created in the future. After all, you can start small, and gradually finish building the station. I would like to hope that the beginning of construction will be carried out in this century ...
