The Safe Internet League sent complaints to the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation against Google and Yandex. Search engines allegedly violate the law "On Advertising" in part related to advertising abortions (abortion), according to a
press release of the organization.
“If we search for“ abortion ”or“ abortion on the day of treatment ”in search engines, we will see contextual advertising of abortion medical services, as well as contextual advertising of abortion medication, said the league’s executive director Denis Davydov. According to him, the largest number of such ads was found in the foreign search engine Google. In smaller numbers, but nevertheless, contextual advertising of abortions was found in the Russian search system Yandex.
“Yandex”
refutes information about the promotion of abortion. According to Asi Melkumova, a spokeswoman for the company, the search service does not distribute advertisements for abortions, but advertising health services, which is not prohibited by law. “The keyword from the search query is not part of the advertisement and this issue was repeatedly considered in the courts and in the FAS. FAS listened to our position and agreed with it. The user can search, for example, information about contraindications to abortions, and it is logical if he receives professional advice on this topic in medical clinics, ”the message from Yandex says.
In November last year, the Federal Law “On Advertising” was amended to expand the list of goods and services whose advertising is prohibited. In particular, medical services for the artificial termination of pregnancy were added to the list. Penalties for this offense are provided for by the Administrative Code and range from 100 to 500 thousand rubles.
