Domain Selection and Trial Domains

The Domain Tools project has launched the Psychic Whois service ("Telepathic Whois"). Telepathic Whois selects variants of domain names containing the entered letter combination and shows how many of them are occupied and how many are free.

Such services, on the one hand, are convenient for users, and on the other, they provide new opportunities for cybersquatters. For example, the Daily Domainer suggests that cybersquatters are tracking the domain selection process.

“You find a great domain, but hesitate with registering it, and then you discover that it is already taken. Accident is possible. But blogs have already actively discussed the view that dishonest registrars sell information about your research to cybersquatters . ”

At the same time, cybersquatters prefer not to park a domain, but to use the domain per sample option available for a number of common domains. The registrars who provide it offer a five-day period of free use of the domain. This was done in order to make life easier for users who made mistakes (were sealed) when registering a domain name. But this initiative also helped in the first place to fraudsters. They created software that can register thousands of domains per hour .

On these domains, cybersquatters advertise from Google AdSense for Domains and Yahoo Domain Match.

If, in five days, the domain begins to generate income that exceeds its value, then it is left, if not, it is released, and it is possible that it is immediately registered again.

Spammers also use "trial domains" in their frauds as a source of temporary Internet addresses that are not afraid of losing due to a ban.

The following figures indicate the growing interest in such a method of registering and using domains: in December 2004, every day, a refusal of 7400 domains taken “on trial” was issued. In December 2006, their number increased to 1.2 million !!!

The proportion of normal registrations fell from 50% to 2%.
