Mobile application that detects ... cosmic rays

I think many have heard of projects like SETI @ home or Einstein @ home . The bottom line is that you donate the computing time of your personal computers to the processing of some scientific information. There was even such a thing as civil science , which, however, is somewhat broader, and includes projects such as those presented on the Zooniverse portal, where you, and not your computer, are already processing information. About some such projects can be read, for example, here or including on Habré / GT.

And now, these ideas have received a completely logical development. It is proposed to use your smartphone or tablet as a practically real scientific device. In this case, as a cosmic ray detector.

The project is called CRAYFIS . The idea is to use the camera of a smartphone or tablet to detect the decay products of high-energy particles reaching the Earth. According to a study conducted by the authors of the application, a standard camera is able to register the arrival of a high-energy photon or muon.

Scientists even promise to include your name in the list of co-authors of a scientific article , if the data from your smartphone will be used when writing it.

The application is available for Android and iPhone, but is currently at the stage of closed beta testing, and is distributed in limited quantities on request.
