Turing Award for the first time awarded to a woman
On Tuesday, the 40th Turing Award was awarded, annually awarded for outstanding achievements in the development of computer technology and named after the “father of computer science” Alan Turing.
Interestingly, for the first time in its history, a woman received it. She became an American Frances Ellen ( Frances E. Allen ).
Like most computer scientists working in the early days of the IT industry, Ellen began her journey at IBM. Having settled there in 1957 with the goal of only earning money to pay off an educational loan, she remained in the company for the next 45 years until she retired.
