Megafon ordered the Kupol storage complex to store traffic according to the law of Spring

National Technologies, one of the leading manufacturers of equipment for SORM, posted on the portal of public procurement documentation for the Kupol data storage system, which was developed with her participation.

As follows from the documentation, by May 30, 2018, the company undertakes to deliver equipment to eight MegaFon sites and three Scartel sites (MegaFon’s subsidiary, operating under the Yota brand). Megafon sites are located in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Yekaterinburg, Saransk, Pskov and Smolensk, and Yota sites in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Samara.

Using this system, MegaFon can store about 100 petabytes of data (62.6 PB in the Moscow data center). Complexes for Yota designed for 7.6 PB. Experts explain that the total traffic of MegaFon is several dozen times higher than the scope of supply, so this is a test purchase of only 1 billion rubles.

The Kupol storage complex was created on March 30, 2018. Its tasks are to create a reliable, fault-tolerant, high-performance storage system, connect to SORM equipment to implement an integrated solution and ensure safe, uninterrupted storage and accumulation of data.

According to the documentation, the storage system "Dome" is a modular data storage system of domestic production, consisting of the following subsystems:

• a subsystem of storage controllers and PCI Express factories;
• subsystem of disk modules;
• complex management subsystem;
• storage network subsystem;
• subsystems of installation infrastructure and auxiliary equipment;
• power distribution subsystem.

For example, here are the characteristics of the controller subsystem.

The central element of the systems is the PCI Express factory, to which storage controllers and disk modules are connected. All components are duplicated, and the factory controller does not have a single point of failure. There is a factory virtualization functionality. The architecture of the Complex allows you to create configurations based on hybrid storage systems, including all modern drives. Reliability of information storage is guaranteed by flexible data integrity protection policies with minimal redundancy based on Reed-Solomon codes. The ratio of the number of controllers to the total volume of disks in disk modules is determined by the external load and can be changed if necessary.

Technical characteristics of the storage controller are given below:

• Processors: 4 POWER8 Turismo SCM
• Computational cores: 40
• Memory: 256GB DDR4
• Memory bus bandwidth: up to 46 GB / s
• PCI Express bus: 2 x16 slots, 3 x8 slots
• Internal disk subsystem: 2 × 480 GB NVMe 2 disks
• Management Tools: Web GUI, CLI, RESTFul API
• Monitoring Tools: SNMP, Call Home, Email Alerts
• Maximum power consumption: 2 kW
• Dimensions (W × H × D): 448 × 87 × 815 mm
• Weight: up to 40 kg
• Form factor: 2 (two) RU

The PCI Express factory is a 3 RU device for installation in standard 19-inch racks. It has a modular architecture. The chassis contains up to 96 NVMe drives up to 8 TB in size and up to 22 expansion cards, while the aggregate throughput of the factory leaves up to 128 GB / s, and all components are duplicated and hot-swappable.

Typical configuration of storage controllers and PCI Express factories includes a backplane of memory modules, an eight-core POWER8 processor of 3.325 GHz, a 32 GB DDR4 RDIMM memory module of 2400 MHz 2Rx4, a NVMe solid-state drive of 480 GB, PCIe HHHL.

The disk module subsystem provides for the installation of 96 3.5 ”SAS / NLSAS / SATA disks with a total maximum capacity of 1152 TB (96 SAS 3.5” × 12 TB).

The storage network subsystem consists of optical switches (hereinafter referred to as OK1-11 and OK1-12) with a capacity of 24 or 64 ports, respectively. Using the storage network subsystem allows you to create storage systems in various versions - from small ultrafast systems built on low pressure (so-called ALL FLASH) to hybrid storage systems of large and extra large volumes (tens and hundreds of petabytes) built on traditional HDDs, the documentation says on the "Dome".

The front panel of the storage controller and PCI Express factory has the following marking: “Made for the Kupol storage complex”. The marking must be made on a metal carrier with the size of 60x15 millimeters (from the documentation on the public procurement website)

For example, for its largest site number 1 (Moscow, Volgogradsky Avenue, 42, building 5 (Bulgaria), floor 1, module 1) Megafon buys storage systems with a usable capacity of 64,152 TB worth 537.3 million rubles. Short composition of the complex:

• Storage controller - 12 pcs.
• PCI Express Factory Controller - 6 pcs.
• Disk Expansion Module - 75 pcs.
• Optical switch OK1-12 for 64 ports of 32 Gbit / s in the collection - 4 pcs.
• Installation cabinet - 17 pcs.
• Storage Software
• Extended service support

Until May 30, the Kupol equipment must be put on the Megafon sites, and installation work will be completed by June 30. All equipment and work on its implementation will cost 923.5 million rubles.

Best comment ( Alter2 ): It is rather ironic that National Technologies produces wiretapping systems for the population.
