A week ago, another post appeared on Habré that Habr is not the same anymore. Regardless of the topics covered in it, I was interested in the question of the rating system and karma - some see the degradation or slipping of the resource “not there” in it.

Without in any way criticizing the current system and taking over the administration’s internal affairs, I wanted to investigate this question from a theoretical point of view - finding the optimal system of user gradation using elementary mathematical methods.

So, for simplicity, let's take the existing system: karma, ratings of articles and comments, user rights depending on its rating and karma are quite enough. The relationship between these concepts is the essence of the values ​​sought.

“Adding” the karma of one user to another is an unknown function, it can depend on the karma of the plus, on the karma of the plus, on their rating, on the topic and level of the article, in which there is a plus and much more. Now this function is equal to one for all who can plyusovat.

This is not ideal, as from a certain point of view it can contribute to nepotism, mutual responsibility, trade in karma and other corruption manifestations. It is quite reasonable if the increase in karma depends on certain parameters of the plus. What a pluser should be responsible for the benefits he gives out (in the form of reducing his karma, for example, or justifying his action). There are many options.

There are other functions besides padding karma on our user parameter space and materials space.

Take the initial set of these functions and parameters, take all users (preferably for the purity of the experience, level all their performance characteristics), and launch the system (website). Month users are creative, plus, minus, and we have all the moves recorded.

The administration of the resource has certain goals: for example, the availability of professional software development materials on the site, a large conversion by sponsors, and more.
