Yandex.Catalog stops accepting applications and closes soon

In 2000, Yandex launched one of its most popular projects, Yandex.Catalog . Attendance of the directory at the peak of popularity was millions of users. Its difference from other similar projects can be called a faceted classification, which allowed organizing a search for resources not only by topic, but also by type of information.

However, with the improvement of search technology, the role of directories began to recede into the second and then into the third plan. After the company launched the search algorithm for Korolev, it became clear that there was simply no point in supporting the work of the Yandex.Catalog project. This is confirmed by the decrease in the attendance of the resource several dozen times.

The Yandex corporation, after analyzing the current situation, came to the conclusion that the project should be closed. The process has already begun, and now the catalog has stopped accepting applications for adding new sites. Nevertheless, the catalog will still work, but what time it is is unclear.

Some functions of Yandex.Catalog will be transferred. For example, this concerns the possibility of linking sites to regions together with saved settings.

But the money for the registration site in the "Directory" will not work back. The company believes that users paid not for the permanent publication of the site, but for expedited registration in the "Catalog". “The service includes the compilation of descriptions, classification, and the conclusion of the site for publication. "Yandex" is considered to have fulfilled its obligations to provide paid registration services from the moment of publication of the corresponding description in the "Catalog", the service description says, adding a site to the "Catalog".

For about 17 years of the project’s operation, over 115 thousand sites have been registered in the “Catalog”.
