How much does Amazon Web Services earn?

Amazon Web Services has become a good revenue generator for Amazon. Over the past year, AWS revenues have grown almost one and a half times (by 49%), and over the past 12 months, the division has received more than $ 5 billion in revenue. The service, once launched for internal use, is now the fastest growing division of Amazon.

CEO Jeff Bezos for the first time disclosed the amount of revenue Amazon Web Services yesterday at a conference for investors. He called the numbers for 12 months, ending March 2015. If business growth continues at the same pace, then AWS can end the calendar year with $ 7 billion.

According to some analysts, the total turnover of Amazon for the year will be $ 102 billion, so it turns out that AWS brings the company about 7% of total revenue.

AWS cloud hosting is used by more than a million people (1.4 million servers in 28 “accessibility zones”). Some of them just have a backup of the data, while others contain more complex applications. In general, when specialists classify AWS as a type of business, it is customary to talk about “infrastructure as a service” (infrastructure-as-a-service).

AWS revenues can already be compared with IBM's cloud service, which last year brought $ 7.7 billion, but this amount also includes sales of cloud-based software applications (software-as-a-service), which Amazon does not do. If we consider only the division of IBM Softlayer, then it accounts for only $ 3.8 billion.

AWS has bypassed another competitor - Microsoft, whose cloud business should generate $ 6.3 billion by the end of this year. Again, this amount includes the Office 365 and Dynamics software applications. It is not known what part falls purely on the infrastructure part.

On the Google Cloud cloud, the exact amount can not be called either. In the financial documentation it falls on the article “Other”, which includes all non-advertising revenues. This article accounts for $ 7 billion in annual revenue.

It should be noted that AWS is a profitable business. The profitability of operations is almost 17%. This is good news for investors, especially as Amazon in the IV quarter. made a profit for the first time in the last few quarters.

According to research firm Gartner, in 2014, the capacity of the Amazon cloud service was about five times higher than the hosting capacity of the 14 closest competitors combined. The cost of AWS equipment (indicated in the company's assets) exceeds $ 6 billion, more than a third of the total value of Amazon’s assets.
