Employees of the non-profit organization Code.org , engaged in the popularization and implementation of computer science in school education, obtained from the US President Barack Obama a signature under the new edition of the Every Student Succeeds Act ( pdf ). This document governs the principles of primary and secondary education in America and, in addition, lists those subjects that are necessary for a fundamental level of education.

Until the last moment, there was no mention of computer science among such subjects. But now, thanks to the six-year effort of attorneys Code.org and the lobby of several senators, the Every Student Succeeds Act officially states that computer science is just as necessary for basic education as history, geography, and music.

Despite the seeming formality, the problem solved by Code.org is in fact serious. According to an organization in the USA, 9 out of 10 parents would like their child to study computer science at school, but in reality only 1 out of 4 schools can really do it. Thanks to the new law, Code.org enthusiasts and volunteers will be able to directly influence the teaching of computer science at school, including because now sources of state funding are open for this.
