It's been a year and a half. Homeless programmer Leo still lives on the street

In August 2013, New York developer and entrepreneur Patrick McConlogue began an unusual experiment . Instead of giving alms to a beggar on the street as usual, Patrick decided to teach the homeless in programming that he earned his living by intellectual work.

Patrick found a homeless man in New York named Leo (pictured on the left) and put him in front of a choice: either you get $ 100 in cash now or you get $ 300 books and a chromebook worth $ 300 (with 3G and solar charging) and private programming lessons at $ 700.

For starters, the homeless was given a chromebook and sent to the training site CodeAcademy . He received the book " JavaScript for beginners ." Later he was given more advanced textbooks. Every day, Patrick got up an hour earlier, so that on the way to work he would drop in on a homeless person and conduct another lesson.

In general, the training went well until Leo was arrested. After that, the police for a long time did not give Chromebook and a smartphone, which was sent to him as a developer of Tizen.

After a few months of training, the homeless released a mobile application Trees for Cars for carpooling (carpooling).

The Patrick McConlog experiment has attracted widespread media attention. A bum was shown on several television channels and invited to participate in talk shows.

“I can work for Google, I can work for SpaceX!”, Said joyful Leo a couple of hours after the official release of the application in the Google Play catalog. “It will change my life drastically!”

Unfortunately, the fate of the homeless programmer was not so happy. He now lives on the same street where Patrick McConlog has met him a year and a half ago. True, in the intervening time, the material condition of the homeless has improved. The Trees for Cars mobile app has earned several thousand dollars, so now it rents a garage to store personal belongings.

Leo no longer programs every day, does not release new versions of the application. A self-taught programmer earns casual jobs like welding and spends time in walking in New York's High Line public park.

From time to time, passersby recognize him, stop him and ask him why he is still on the street. Grand is embarrassed to answer this question: he usually says that he just likes nature and fresh air. And so in the plans of Leo Grand - to release a second, more successful application, and move to a luxurious residential complex with apartments.

Good luck to you, Leo!
