Thunderbird returns to Debian

In fact, this is not about returning Thunderbird, but about returning your original name to the email client. Due to the legal nature of the use of Mozilla’s trademarks, Debian maintainers were forced to distribute this software package under the name IceDove. The situation was similar with the Firefox (Iceweasel) browser.

The essence of legal problems is that Mozilla, for its trademarks, only allows the preservation of the name if the product is assembled from the original source code. However, in Debian, additional patches superimposed the original code.

But, given the importance of the Debian project and the fact that members of the Mozilla community are engaged in supporting packages with Iceweasel and IceDove in Debian, an exception was made that allows the use of the original names.

The situation with the forced renaming lasted about 10 years.

Technical details here (there is nothing serious: because of the renaming, you have to change the names of the directories with the profile and configs. But nothing extraordinary.)
