At
ipfs.pics, free image hosting has started. It would seem that there is interesting? It looks like the usual free hosting, except that without ads. But IPFS.pics is different from all similar projects, because it is based on the
InterPlanetary File System distributed file system. Files are not stored on the central server, but in the P2P network of users who voluntarily participate in the project.
When a picture is uploaded to the IPFS network, a 46-byte hash is calculated for it, which serves as a unique digital file identifier. This way it is guaranteed that the same file will not be downloaded to the network twice.
The hash corresponds to the file name.

To download a file, it is enough to know its hash, even if the IPFS website is not working.
Thus, in the IPFS network files are more difficult (almost impossible) to delete or block using censorship restrictions. Theoretically, after uploading to a distributed hosting, the picture will be on the web forever, although there is an important condition: someone must request it, otherwise the picture is not shipped to the new feasts and may disappear.
The source code of the server is
open . Unused computing power is donated to the
Folding @ Home distributed drug search project.
Judging by the project code, S3 is currently (temporarily) used for the backend, but it will be abandoned when a large number of nodes are registered on the network.
Starting IPFS node:
ipfs bootstrap add /ip4/45.55.151.20/tcp/4001/ipfs/QmdkJZUWnVkEc6yfptVu4LWY8nHkEnGwsxqQ233QSGj8UP
PS In the past, IPFS developers created a cryptocurrency tied to a distributed file hosting service,
Filecoin .
