FSB has found a spyware virus in the computer networks of government agencies and defense enterprises

The original news on the website of the FSB of Russia is entitled “The FSB of Russia revealed facts of introducing malicious software into computer networks of about 20 organizations located in the territory of the Russian Federation” - which doesn’t look impressive at all - but upon further reading it turns out to be a somewhat more interesting context.

As a result of the analysis carried out by FSB specialists, it was found that information resources of state authorities and administration, scientific and military institutions, enterprises of the defense industry complex and other objects of the country’s critical infrastructure were contaminated . Virus software was made for each “victim” individually, based on the unique characteristics of the attacked vehicle.

The virus is spread by sending an e-mail containing a malicious attachment. After its introduction into the system, the malicious program loads the necessary modules, taking into account the characteristics of the “victim”, after which it is capable of intercepting network traffic, listening to it, taking screenshots of the screen, independently turning on webcams and PC microphones, mobile devices, recording audio and video files , data about pressing the keys of the keyboard, etc.

Personally, in this story I would like to ask two questions: why mail was not checked “at the entrance”, and how malicious content could be running on computers owned by so many serious organizations. Just wondering, you know! ..
