The new version of Tor Browser: the rejection of SHA-1 and the transition to search DuckDuckGo

Yesterday a new version of Tor Browser was released - 6.0. The new version fixes a lot of bugs, including the possibility of replacing the DLL during the installer program. The browser now uses DuckDuckGo search results and no longer supports SHA-1 certificates.

The Tor Browser has been using Disconnect for anonymous searches for quite some time. This is a service for ensuring network privacy — it offers, among other things, VPN and anonymous search services.

Previously , a Disconnect search worked as a meta-search engine, yielding a combination of search results from different search engines. But more recently, Google has banned meta-search access to their sites, and Disconnect has switched to working with the search engine Bing (anyone can choose to search for Yahoo). According to the developers of Tor, the search results for Bing leave much to be desired, so they asked Disconnect developers to switch to DuckDuckGo , which, they say, works much better.

In addition, due to the deteriorating security situation of certificates based on SHA-1, the Tor Browser has ceased to support such certificates. He became the first such browser - the rest so far promise to do it. Microsoft's browsers will soon mark sites with such certificates as unreliable, and the company promises to completely block them from next year. The Mozilla Firefox developers also planned to set the date for the ban of such certificates for 2017, but now they are thinking of starting early. Google Chrome developers follow the same graphics as the Firefox guys.

Tor Browser 6.0 uses Firefox 45 Extended Support Release as a base. Also improved browser support on Mac OS X, and now users should not have problems with Gatekeeper.

In order to keep the same security, Tor recommends updating via the browser’s built-in function — though I decided to download the new browser using the usual method, since the download of the 6.0 browser was expected to take two and a half days to download.
