According to the Japanese edition of The Mainichi , on Sunday it became known that in May more than 1.4 billion yen ($ 12.7 million) was stolen from 1,400 ATMs located throughout Japan. The operation was done in just two hours.

So far, the main version of law enforcement agencies is the use of counterfeit bank cards by hackers based on information leaked from a South African bank. Police are going to work with the authorities of South Africa through Interpol to determine how this information was stolen.

Police believe that more than 100 intruders, coordinating their actions, have withdrawn money from ATMs located in convenience stores in Tokyo and 16 prefectures throughout the country. In total, more than 14,000 transactions were conducted, the maximum of which included withdrawals of 100,000 yen.

ATMs were attacked Bank of Seven Bank. For the implementation of the operation fraudsters made 1600 plastic cards.

Unfortunately, the situation with cash thefts in Japan is likely to only get worse. In the wake of the continuing stagnation of the economy , which even the state’s buyout of shares of commercial companies does not help, the government introduced negative interest rates on bank deposits , hoping to somehow force the population to invest in the economy. As a result, there was only an increase in sales of home safes - people now prefer to keep money at home.
