Postal services in Russia will be obliged to deliver SORM
And now it’s not about electronic services - postal services, but about postal service operators. SORM will have to be installed by Russian Post, SPSR-Express, FedEx Russia and other domestic or foreign companies operating in the Russian Federation. After installation, SORM will begin collecting data on senders and recipients of letters and parcels, photographing the appearance of the package, and performing other operations, writes Izvestia. If a package or letter causes suspicion, it can be placed in a cell for further study.
The corresponding instruction is contained in the order of the Ministry of Communications and Mass Communications “On approving the requirements for the equipment for automated mail sorting, which ensures that the specified actions are carried out when carrying out operational search activities”. Installation of the relevant system must be performed by companies within a year from the moment the order enters into force.
“The authorized body for the implementation of ORM in the field of postal communication is the Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia. The system should be introduced by postal service operators licensed to provide postal services using appropriate automated sorting equipment. If the operator does not possess such equipment, then these requirements do not apply to him. The order provides for a transition period - within one year from the moment of approval of the plan of measures for the introduction of technical means, provided for by the rules of interaction of telecom operators, ”said Mikhail Evrayev, Deputy Minister of Communications and Mass Media of Russia.
In addition to the address of the recipient and the sender, the system will record the number and identifier, the date and time of departure, the names of organizations whose symbols are found on the mailing, additional inscriptions. SORM will be equipped with the function of remote work, with the acceptance of operator commands via the Internet.
