The company Open Wisper Systems, which produces mobile messenger with terminal encryption Signal, announced the release of the desktop version of its program as an extension for the Chrome browser. Technically, everything is done in such a way that Signal Desktop is attached to the installed mobile Signal application (it also does the web version of WhatsApp approximately) and you can send and receive messages on both devices.

To bind to the smartphone, only the Android version of Signal is currently supported, and the release of an iOS version with support for the desktop application will be reported additionally. Now, in addition to instant messaging, you can send and receive images, as well as video files.

For now, it’s not so easy to install Signal Desktop into your browser. The company offers to leave your email address to receive an invite (at the time of this writing, there were 2929 users in the queue). You can speed up the process by sharing the link to get an invite in social networks: the more friends register with this link, the sooner you can receive an invitation.

About a month ago, Edward Snowden told on his Twitter account that he used Signal every day, meaning his mobile version. To emphasize the security of this decision, Snowden made it clear that the FBI is aware of this, but cannot do anything about it. The company itself Open Whisper Systems keeps the source code on GitHub and says that everyone can check the code for the absence of backdoors. Messenger exists on the donations of users and will never be paid or will contain advertising.
