Telegram blocked in Iran: the service did not allow the authorities to monitor users
The creator of the Telegram messenger Pavel Durov on Twitter said that the service received a request from the Iranian authorities to provide them with espionage and censorship tools. Telegram ignored them and was blocked.
Telegram is currently working on a p2p network that will make blocking impossible.
According to Pavel Durov, the Iranian authorities want to gain access to the messages of users. Telegram ignored this requirement, after which local providers began to restrict traffic, and on October 20, the Iranian Ministry of Information and Communication Technology blocked the service for two hours. Now the work of the messenger is restored.
The Iranian ICT Ministry said it had not received instructions from the leadership to block Telegram. The Ministry denies the requirement to filter the content of user messages.
Messenger blocked since July 2015 in China. The government newspaper explained this by the fact that Telegram is used to coordinate attacks on the Communist Party and the government. Now China is preparing new laws on cybersecurity and countering terrorism , which will oblige Internet providers to filter user messages and, if necessary, to interrupt communication.
