UTorrent users of the most popular bittorrent client, when upgrading to the latest version 3.4.2, build 28913 (32-bit), faced a disagreeable effect: another program called
EpicScale was quietly installed along with the program for downloading files.
As it turned out, this is a program from
EpicScale Inc. , which uses the idle time of your computer's processor for its needs. According to the company's assurances, the unused capacity is used for good purposes - for solving various mathematical problems, calculating physical simulations, and even mining cryptocurrencies. All these calculations and the resulting cryptocurrency go to charity and are used "in order to improve the world in which we live."
All the more surprising, instead of advertising their good intentions, EpicScale decided not to disturb users, and simply install their software on their system without their knowledge. Not only can this behavior be regarded as unethical, but also installing a program that drives the processor into the tail and mane can cause difficulties when working with a computer.
Suppose this is a laptop that needs to work as long as possible without access to the power grid. In addition, there are no guarantees that the program will not add any vulnerabilities to the user's system, as happened with Lenovo and its
infamous partner Superfish.

At the uTorrent project support forum, numerous users confirmed that the program was installed by EpicScale without any warnings from the installer. And although the program appears in the “Add or Remove Programs” section, the uninstallation leaves its executable files in the ProgramData \ EpicScale folder.
The representative of uTorrent, in response, said that their company has entered into a partnership agreement with EpicScale. But at the same time, he, contrary to the experience of the users, is sure that when installing the user they are asked about the desire to install EpicScale, and when uninstalling the program there should be only one file that serves to identify the user.
