US police do not want citizens to monitor their work

American police are extremely unhappy with the ability of civilians to track their work with applications like Waze . Such a statement was made at the NSA convention by its chairman Mike Brown (in this case, the NSA stands for “National Sheriffs Association”).

The Waze application for smartphones is a service familiar to many modern motorists. It monitors the speed of participants, identifying traffic jams and congestion, allows participants to share information about road closures, accidents and police operations. In addition, users successfully report to each other about cameras that record violations and road patrol officers lurking in the bushes. The program has other useful functions, for example, a search for a gas station with competitive prices.

However, representatives of the NSA claim that, reporting on the whereabouts of police officers, citizens thereby put the lives of these officers at risk and make it difficult to conduct special operations. In this regard, the application even branded "the persecutor of the police." Jim Pasco, executive director of the Fraternity Order of Police organization, says: “I can think of a hundred ways how this can harm the police. Unable to control the use of [this service]. If you are a criminal, and you are planning to rob a bank, hypothetically you can use Waze. ”

Organizations involved in spying on citizens, are in awe of the attempts of citizens, in turn, to monitor these organizations or to get out of surveillance by using modern encryption systems. In view of the proliferation of portable video recorders, even the term “ sousveillance ” has appeared. He is opposed to the concept of "surveillance", i.e. "Surveillance" or "supervision". The French word sur, meaning “above,” means that “supervision” is conducted from above, i.e. authorities that control citizens. And citizens, trying to answer the ancient question “who will guard the watchmen,” organize, if you will, “podzor,” observation from below.

This process, which is so disliked by recent monopolists in the field of surveillance, helps expose false propaganda, bring unscrupulous law enforcement officers to clean water, and just get out of difficult life situations. Many motorists have already appreciated the advantage of having a DVR that helps solve road traffic disputes and fight against avtoospodschiki . New technologies raise new questions about the rights of citizens, and these issues one way or another will have to be addressed, taking into account the views of all parties.
