Information Security Specialist Jan Kissler, also known as Starbug, at the Chaos Computer Club conference in Hamburg, gave a report from which he managed to get the thumb of German Defense Minister Ursula von der Layen using a photograph taken with a regular camera and using open source software. Krysler is known for having managed to trick the TouchID identification system in the iPhone 5S 48 hours after the smartphone went on sale.

The photograph of Minister Layen was taken at one of the press conferences with the help of an “ordinary camera” from a distance of about three meters - this picture was the main one. In addition, Kissler used several other photos that played a supporting role and were taken at different times and from different angles. For photo processing, he used the VeriFinger commercial biometric identification program (a 30-day SDK for Windows, Linux and OS X is available).

Kissler says that “apparently, politicians will have to wear gloves during public speeches,” but did not provide precise technical details of the process. It is also difficult to understand whether it has any relation to the company that develops commercial VeriFinger, which was used.
