Mandriva ceases to exist

This is sad news for Linux fans. The French technical company Mandriva is liquidated according to the information placed in the catalog of organizations, Business Insider reports .

In 2013, Mandriva earned an income of 553,000 euros, but this was not enough to keep the company afloat in 2015.

For decades, Mandriva has been trying to dislodge Microsoft's desktop OS from the throne. The first bid for success was a deal made in 2007 with the Nigerian government. Then Mandriva convinced them to abandon Windows in favor of their product, which, in consequence, was installed on 17,000 computers in Nigerian schools.

Mandriva also enjoyed some success in Malaysia.

In 2012, the company is not the first time on the verge of bankruptcy. Mandriva faced financial problems at the dawn of its existence, in 1998. Several times the company was saved by Jean-Manuel Crozet, who in 2011 took over as chief operating officer, and after that, the position of general director.

Now Crozet’s LinkedIn profile reports that his job as CEO of Mandriva came to an end in May of this year. Now he has focused on his own company, SimplyWorks, and is working as an IT consultant in Switzerland.

Linux has become a huge, dominant force in the server operating system and data processing, has generated a sufficient number of prosperous commercial companies, for example, Red Hat. But it was not possible to press Windows from Microsoft on Linux personal computers. Another Linux success is Androind, which the Linux Foundation likes to resemble.

But it seems that it is impossible to press Windows. As Mandriva said in a LWN.net blog about the closure of Mandriva: “This is a sad end for a company that, since 1998, has been trying to make the dream of massive desktop Linux a reality.”
