Blocked Russian sites remain in the top 10 most visited resources in Ukraine

According to SimilarWeb statistics , the VKontakte site is still among the five most visited resources for Ukrainian users, including Facebook ahead. That is, it is still the most popular social network, despite attempts by the authorities to block access to it.

The Ukrainian authorities failed to completely block the popular Russian sites. Although their attendance decreased significantly, but all popular sites remained in the top ten: “VKontakte” - in 4th place, “Odnoklassniki” - on the 8th, “Yandex” - on the 9th, Mail.Ru - on the 10th .

Recall that on May 16, 2017, a special decree of President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in the country blocked access to all Mail.Ru services, including Vkontakte, Odnoklassniki, the portal and postal service. Services of Yandex and sites of other companies, such as Kaspersky Lab and DrWeb, are also blocked.

The expanded sanctions list includes 1228 individuals and 468 legal entities.

The sanctions not only provide for blocking websites, but also a three-year ban on the economic activities of Russian companies in Ukraine. As a result, the social network VKontakte soon liquidated its headquarters in Kiev : some of the workers moved to Moscow, the rest were dismissed. The same fate soon befell the offices of Mail.Ru and Yandex , and the offices of the latter were completely searched by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

The reason for the introduction of sanctions against Russia was the holding of elections to the Russian State Duma on the territory of the Crimea and the “illegal detention of Ukrainians for political reasons”. Specifically, social networks, according to Poroshenko, were used "for the purpose of influencing opponents and counter-propaganda."

SimilarWeb compares traffic in April and October 2017 (data takes into account the country of origin of traffic from the desktop, even if a person uses a VPN):

As you can see, most of all users in relative terms lost “Yandex”. This is probably due to the fact that this site has a high-quality alternative in the form of Google, and even before blocking, Yandex was only search engine number 2 on the Ukrainian market.

Experts say that the current level of Ukraine’s telecommunications infrastructure does not effectively block Russian websites: “Global blocking on the territory of Ukraine requires investments in the region of millions of dollars and changes in network infrastructure,” said Alexander Fedyenko, chairman of the Internet Association of Ukraine.

To help Ukrainians bypass the blocking, VKontakte and Odnoklassniki introduced a proxy server into their applications, and Yandex did the same in their browser. Note that under the new Russian laws, these actions would be illegal if they were intended to bypass the lock in Russia.

The blocking of Russian sites will continue: “Unfortunately, Russian networks have been and remain the tools of special operations of the Russian special services in an undeclared war against Ukraine. Therefore, we will continue to closely monitor and reduce their presence, ”Poroshenko said in a September message to parliament.
