Head of ICANN: this year the US will lose control of ICANN

ICANN head Fadi Chehadé expressed confidence that his organization will be privatized (denationalized) and will be out of control of the American government before the end of this year, AFP reports .

The contract between ICANN and the US government to manage the organization expires on September 30, 2015.

The Corporation for the management of domain names and IP addresses regulates issues related to domain names, IP addresses and other aspects of the functioning of the Internet. It is believed that it is ICANN that “governs the Internet”, although this is more of a formal definition for the supervisor in a decentralized, self-governing network.

However, American control over ICANN is annoying to some political leaders. This fact threatens the fragmentation of the Internet, that is, the isolation of individual national sites.

However, not everyone shares Shehade’s confidence. In particular, individual US congressmen are trying to thwart ICANN's denationalization plans. In their opinion, the United States should not “give up the Internet,” because it supposedly means the end of democracy and freedom on the Web. But they remain in the minority.

Shehade says that now the plan is supported by about 150 countries. Instead of the United States, the supervision of the Domain Names and IP Addresses Management Corporation will be transferred to the global group, which will include government, civil society and commercial representatives. As a result, a more neutral, independent structure will be created. In addition, it should be more manageable, said Shehade.
