US President Barack Obama, speaking before the Federal Trade Commission,
proposed to begin the development of legislation related to the recent hacker attacks. At the state level, new laws should require companies to inform their users within 30 days that their personal data were threatened by a hacker attack — the mechanism should be called Personal Data Notification.
The main reason for this initiative of the American president was the sensational story of the breaking of the servers of Sony Pictures Entertainment, when not only films, but also private data of employees (social security card numbers, credit card numbers, email addresses) were made publicly available. In this case, the attack was allegedly caused by the release of one of Sony’s films, which caused outrage among the North Korean authorities, who organized - presumably - a hacker attack. The White House believes that there are “numerous vulnerabilities” in front of cyber attacks. President Obama himself says so:
This is a direct threat to economic security, and we must stop it.
(It is curious to note that one of the phrases of the American president in the original sounds better than in the Russian translation: "
If we are going to be connected, then we need to be protected ")
Similar laws that require mandatory notification in case of a threat of disclosure of personal data already exist in California, but now they are planned to be adopted on a national scale.
In addition, Obama proposed adopting the Student Data Privacy Act, which prohibits companies collecting data on university students using various online services, to use this data for profit. Whether it concerns such giants as Facebook or Google is not yet clear.
