GitHub Reply to Roskomnadzor Page Lock

On December 2, seven pages of the GitHub service were blocked by Roskomnadzor. This led to the fact that, having no technical capability, many providers blocked the service completely. Yesterday I sent a request to GitHub with a request to tell how Roskomnadzor contacted the service, whether there are similar locks in other countries and whether they are ready to remove content on demand.

The service is currently unlocked , and we have a response from the GitHub spokesperson.

The text of the letter is translated into Russian.

In many countries, there are laws that can be applied to content on GitHub. In order to provide access to more than seven million people around the world to GitHub, it is sometimes necessary to block such content on our own if we receive a request for this from the responsible authority.

This week we received this request from Roskomnadzor, the Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Communications, Information Technologies and Mass Communications of Russia.

Since then, we have been blocked in the Russian Federation for content prohibited by law, and we are working to restore access. Please note that according to the GitHub Terms of Use :
You may not use the Service for any illegal activity. You must not, using the service, violate the laws of the country under whose jurisdiction you fall (including but not limited to copyright or trademark laws).

We believe in the transparency of our activities and let the public know when it is possible, what content is blocked by GitHub and why. To this end, we published a notice from Roskomnadzor and will continue to post requests from the Russian Federation about content blocking.
