MapFactor GPS Navigation - a new application for navigating maps Openstreetmap

In my first post for an invite, I made a comparison between programs for navigation using data from Openstreetmap. Not so long ago, a new application for working with OSM maps appeared in the Windows Phone application store - MapFactor GPS Navigation


As I understand it, this application has long existed on the Android platform, but I was not familiar with it.

Discretion and usability - 4.5

When you open the program on the first screen there is a simple finger-oriented menu.

Unfortunately, the buttons on it cannot be dragged in places, and their arrangement is very strange, as I think. If these were tiles that you can drag, it would be great at all. The second is that the main screen is the only control center of the program, and you can only get into it by pressing the “Back” hardware button; there are no buttons that could return it from the card. Depending on the item selected in this main menu, pressing "Back" has an unknown N-th number of times, so you can accidentally exit the program. Sub-points in principle are simple and clear.

Map drawing speed - 4.0

My main machine is, as before, Lumia 920. I was slightly surprised that the speed of movement (not even the speed of rendering) is lower than what is meant by sight, it certainly does not reach critical values ​​around zero, but somehow "Smacks of android." I feel, on devices with 512 MB of miracles, you should not expect at all, we are waiting for fixes.

Possibilities of working with offline maps and laying a route - 5.0

Maps from osm.earth with a monthly update. Offline everything, including laying a route.

Unfortunately, I was not able to test the route auto-adjustment and the work under Lockscreen. Explanations in Russian are also available for download. What could be improved is to propose loading maps based on the current location, as it turned out, my Nizhny Novgorod region is located partly in the Volga Federal District, partly in the Central Federal District, along with the neighboring regions and Moscow - total gluing of the atlas along the left bank of the Gorky Sea does not prevent navigation and in no way noticeable, but at first downloading only the VFD I was surprised that I could not get a route from the village back to the city.

Design - 4

Four hard. But there is something to improve, see at least the first point about the main screen. Several themes are available for selection of maps, and are barely visible on all skins of the house. Only one color scheme - “AutoPilot Day” allows you to distinguish slightly dark gray houses on a medium-gray background. Why there are no standard OSM colors - is unknown. Sent a slightly angry letter

Under the card there are 2 OSD slots in which you can put all sorts of information, by default there is the expected travel time and the distance to the point is convenient. There are 2 map modes - 2D and 3D, but in general, I didn’t really like the 3D mode, there are no tilt controls, the zoom pinch stops working, but at home they were flat and remain.

Subjective personal opinion - 4.5

Challenger. All similar card applications, in spite of the OSM base, are worse. Pedestrian navigation in a semi-rural area is important for me, when the names of, for example, streets and house numbers in villages are not very important, but it is important where the hole in the forest belt is to reach the village, and the dirt roads that are also present here. If it were possible to draw paths - everything would be fine, in general, the main screen and slow drawing when moving the map - what I would like to change at first glance.

UPD: At the moment, the developers are making a new universal rendering engine that will be used in all versions of the program, there will be the ability to edit the color sets themselves in the skin of the map, and the rendering speed will noticeably improve. According to the developers, all this will happen during this year.
