Opera Software can be sold

The Norwegian company Opera Software, which is best known as the producer of the Opera browser, can be sold due to its low financial results. It is reported by Reuters, citing sources within the company. In addition, other market participants are interested in acquiring the company, and relevant consultations are held with Morgan Stanley International. The decision about the fate of Opera Software will be made by the management of the company in the second half of this year.

According to the published financial results of the Norwegian company, although its revenue for the second quarter of 2015 increased by 45%, which amounted to $ 146 million on an annualized basis, it nevertheless turned out to be lower than forecasts by Reuters analysts, who estimated this figure at 51%. For the entire 2015, the profit forecast of Opera Software was reduced to $ 600-618 million, despite the fact that previously it was at the level of $ 630-650 million. It is interesting that at the same time Opera announces major purchases: the company announced the acquisition of a subscription service for mobile apps and games called Bemobi for $ 139.5 million. Overall, Opera’s financial expectations were lower due to the lack of efficiency in the mobile advertising division, a Reuters source said. In April of this year, the company already had to dismiss 5% of its employees.

Rumors about selling Opera to third-party owners appear on the Internet for quite some time. So in late May 2012, the media reported that Opera has plans to buy Opera from Facebook. True, as it became clear later, these intentions, if they really were, did not lead to anything. Also among potential buyers Opera usually indicate the Russian company “Yandex”, which in its browser uses the technology of compression of traffic developed by the Norwegians.
