Coinbase cryptocurrency wallet owners are faced with double write-offs of fees due to the nature of Visa



In mid-February, the owners of Coinbase cryptographic problems ran into a problem - they were charged several times for commission transactions. Initially it was thought that this was a technical problem with the service, however, his leadership denied this by shifting the blame to the Visa payment system.

What is the problem


The problem became known after Reddit users began to discuss writing off large commissions from their accounts. Sometimes the amounts written off reached several thousand dollars. Coinbase acknowledged the problem in its blog, stating that all affected users will be refunded. At the same time, on Twitter, representatives of the company reported that the write-offs were due to the fact that the Visa payment system was “rolling back” the payments and making them again, which looked like a double money write-off:

Coinbase support explained the problem by the fact that the Visa system suddenly began to consider cryptocurrency transactions not as a purchase, but as a cash issue. The commission corresponding to the new conditions had to be written off the accounts, and the previous charges would immediately return. However, due to the fact that operations to return funds to the card do not occur instantaneously, some users may have observed a decrease in balance.

Visa Reaction


Initially, Visa representatives denied this, saying that they did not make any system changes that could lead to double transactions and no other companies except Coinbase claimed similar problems with users.

However, a little later, the management of the payment system revised its view of the problem, and a statement was published, which already acknowledged that Coinbase was not to blame for the situation, and that all accidentally written off funds had already been sent to users' accounts.
