Motivation
In recent days I have been thinking about new material for Habr, at the same time I want to publish it in English, in order to refer to articles in the English-speaking segment of the Internet.
To achieve a similar result with Habr, you can write an article on
Medium and post a link to
Hacker News .
But in addition to development, Medium publishes anything and therefore the audience there is very different, there is no possibility to broadcast only to developers, as is the case with Habr, and only those who are likely to search for it in a search engine will read the article. Cons can be listed further.
')
Hacker News (in general, like Medium) is more like a forum about everything than a serious resource where you can discuss a publication that will be relevant for many years after the article is published.
The topic of searching for an analogue of Habr in English has been raised several times (
here ,
here ,
here and
here ) and I think there are many more different options, but there isn’t, in my opinion, a standard that Habr is considered to be in the Russian segment.
Apparently the topic is of interest not only to me. Therefore, in my opinion, a logical proposal arose that I would like to submit for public discussion.
Sentence
What does the community and the TM team think about launching the English version of Habr?
Should we wait for such a development of events?
Of the possible benefits:- For authors, it is an opportunity to share (often) a unique experience with an English-speaking audience, thus, among other things, designate oneself in the international market.
- For TM to attract Western corporate clients, receiving, with greater income.
- The opportunity to make the project international and even industry standard (as it is now in RuNet), since there are no complete analogues.
Filling:- I think the authors themselves will want to translate a large number of existing articles (it is probably worth hiring professional translators to help edit translations)
- Existing articles will also be translated by users for the sake of practice, advertising their work and advantages in karma (as they are now translating from English into Russian)
- Perhaps it will become a standard to prepare articles in two languages for Habr and for English Habr.
How do you like the idea? Would you like a similar resource, would you write there?
Update: meduzzer found a
domain that Habrahabr allegedly bought out a week ago -
habr.io.
